BANGI: Tecnic Group Bhd, a plastic products manufacturer, plans to invest between RM10mil and RM12mil to expand its capacity in food and beverage (F&B) and consumer product packaging in the first quarter of next year as the outlook for the sector is positive.
Besides F&B and consumer product packaging, Tecnic, formerly known as STS Tecnic Bhd, is also involved in the electrical and electronics, automotive, medical and oil and gas businesses.
Executive director Ivan Gan said the expansion in F&B and consumer product packaging might start as early as the end of this year. The company plans to use internally generated funds to invest in factory expansion and new machineries.
“The sector had insulated us during the global financial crisis early last year, sustaining healthy demand compared to the other business divisions.
“But its growth over the years has somewhat been only marginal so we decided to put more resources and effort to grow the sector going forward,” he told reporters after the company’s annual general meeting (AGM) yesterday.
Gan added that the F&B and consumer product packaging sector contributed between 15% and 20% to the company’s revenue for the past few years.
“And we intend to grow the contribution to up to 30% of our topline post-expansion.
“Furthermore, we have been expanding the other sectors in the past few years and now it’s time to put more focus on the F&B and consumer product packaging sector,” he said.
Tecnic’s major customers in the sector include Unilever, Carlsberg Brewery and Ajinomoto.
At the AGM, Tecnic adopted a dividend policy to maintain a minimum payout of 50% of its annual profit after tax to shareholders with effect from the 2010 financial year.
“This is to reward our long-term shareholders,” said Gan.
For financial year 2009, Tecnic announced a final dividend of 16% tax exempt.
Tecnic posted a net profit RM13.1mil in the financial year ended Dec 31, 2009, up 52% from the previous year. Revenue was at RM137.5mil, up 25.8%. As of Dec 31, 2009 its cash and equivalents stood at RM10.8mil.
On the general business outlook, Gan said the economy was growing steadily and that the the markets that the company operated in in looked intact.
Also, our business is well diversified and that if one sector that we are involved in falters, we have four others to back it up,” he said.

Tecnic to focus on five core segments
Tuesday April 27, 2010
By SHARIDAN M. ALI
BANGI: Tecnic Group Bhd, a plastic products manufacturer, will continue to rely on a business model that helped turn it around in 2005, said its executive director Ivan Gan.
The company, formerly known as STS Tecnic Bhd, was a loss-making company before a new management took over in 2004 and implemented an already existing business model.
Executive director Ivan Gan said prior to that the implementation was hampered by limited funds to acquire equipment and human resources that were much needed for the company to grow.
“It was in trouble after the Asian financial crisis in 1997. But, when we came in, the debt were gradually decreased over the years, investment were made to expand the company and we started marketing aggressively for new customers a few years back,” Gan told StarBiz.
He said the new management introduced electrical and electronics as well as automotive sectors as part of the turnaround plan.
Tecnic now boasts five core segments including medical, industrial and consumer packaging as well as oil and gas. The mix gives it the edge over rivals in the plastic components industry.
The company returned to the black in 2005 from a net loss of RM6.3mil in 2004 and recently posted a net profit RM13.1mil in the previous financial year ended Dec 31, up 52% from previous corresponding year.
Revenue was at RM137.5mil, up 25.8% for the period under review and the company which now has zero gearing, has also proposed a final dividend of 16 sen per share.
As of Dec 31, 2009 its cash and its equivalents stood at RM10.8mil.
“Our involvement in a mixed range of sectors has made us resilient during recession. Although some sectors are badly hit by the global economic crisis, we can still rely on the other sectors that are still growing in demand such as consumer packaging and medical. That was why we still recorded strong growth in 2008 and 2009,” he said.
Among its notable customers are Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, Unilever, Cadbury, Carlsberg, Shell, Petronas, Exxon Mobil and BP Castrol.
Gan said Tecnic’s strength in plastic moulding was an added advantage over the other players, armed with latest tooling technology such as overmoulding, double-injection, multi cavities, gas assist injection and electric moulding just to name a few.
“This has enable us to produce high gloss, precision and rigorous quality products,” he said.
This year, Gan said Tecnic had targeted 20% growth in both top and bottomlines in tandem with growing demand from its customers.
“Our capital expenditure (capex) this year will be around RM6mil to RM8mil focusing on technology upgrading. Our capex this year is lower than 2008 and 2009 that stood at RM13.1mil and RM10.2mil respectively as the company spent a lot on expansion of its factory expansion including land acquisition in the last two years,” he said.
Currently, the company is utilising between 65% and 70% of its total facilities’ capacity.

Plastic product makers poised for better year
Friday September 4, 2009
By IZWAN IDRIS
They stand to gain from innovations and lower production costs
PETALING JAYA: It may be a tough year for the local plastic products manufacturing industry, with annual sales expected to drop 12% from a record RM16.24bil achieved in 2008.
However, a number of listed plastic product makers are on track for their best-ever year in terms of profits, as they reaped the benefit of product innovations and lower production costs.
“We had a good first half and the trend is sustainable at least for the rest of the year,’’ Tecnic Group Bhd executive director Ivan Gan told StarBiz recently.
Gan said this was due to cheaper resin costs compared with last year, while at the same time Tecnic managed to win “new customers and improve margins by providing value-added services’’.
For the six months ended June 30, Tecnic’s net profit jumped 65% to RM6.2mil from RM3.77mil in the previous corresponding period. Revenue improved 32% to RM61.4mil.
“The management has delivered a commendable track record by growing revenue and improving margins as guided,’’ Netresearch Asia said in a recent note.
Tecnic was projected to post a net profit of RM12mil for the year ending Dec 31, 2009 (FY09), the research firm said. That prediction, if met, will be the group’s highest profit so far.
“We believe the group will perform better in 2010 in tandem with the improving macroeconomic outlook,’’ Standard & Poor’s Malaysia (S&P) said in a recent report on Tecnic.
S&P projected Tecnic’s net profit would grow from an estimated RM11.3mil in FY09 to RM14.9mil in FY10.
Tecnic makes plastic beer crates, automotive parts and its own patented triple-locking pails used as lubricants packaging. The group’s clients are mostly multinational companies (MNCs).
At yesterday’s close, Tecnic has a market capitalisation of RM75mil.
Other companies in the industry that seem to flourish in these tough economic times are the plastic film makers that supply flexible packaging products mainly to large MNCs in the food and beverage sector.
Tomypak Holdings Bhd netted RM8.3mil in the six months ended June 30, which exceeded its full-year net profit of RM7.6mil in FY08.
The company attributed the strong results to “improved overseas market, higher sales of better quality products and lowest cost of goods manufactured over the past six months.’’
Bigger rival Daibochi Plastics and Packaging Industry Bhd made a net profit of RM10.8mil in the first six months on sales of RM113mil.
At the end of last year, Daibochi introduced a new sealing layer for its food and beverage customers that was cheaper to produce and speeded up packaging process.
“The management is confident that its current earnings trend is sustainable at least until FY10.
“This is given that orders are generally based on two-year contract terms and cost savings or increases are passed through directly on quarterly basis,’’ a local bank-backed brokerage said yesterday.
Annualising Daibochi’s half-year income would lift its full-year net profit to RM21mil. The group’s best year to-date was in 2003, when it made a net profit just shy of RM10mil.
Daibochi is the market leader in flexible packaging in the country, with an estimated market share of 30% to 35% based on revenue.
The company has a market value of RM108mil while Tomypak is worth RM56mil.
